Verbena lasiostachys (Western Vervain)

Verbena lasiostachys (Western Vervain)

Verbena lasiostachys (Western Vervain) is a Californian native. In gardens, given water, it can become 5 feet tall and looks nice at the back of borders or along fences. It resembles Verbena bonariensis, but the leaves are much wider and lighter green. This native variety of Verbena flowers midsummer with large purple flowers and are a wonderful food source for bees, and butterflies in a period when there aren't many wild flowers around.
Being a deciduous perennial, you have to cut it back to the ground in winter.
This plant is not fussy about soil type, nor attractive for deer, loves sun and an excellent plant for erosion on slopes.
If you don't want this plant to spread around too much, better give it very little water.
