Mahonia aquifolium (Oregon Grape)

Mahonia aquifolium (Oregon Grape)

This is a California native plant that looks good all year long. This evergreen upright shrub with dense foliage grows to 6 ft. tall and spreads by underground runners. Foliage resembles holly, glossy green leaflets with very spikey edges. New growth tips are red to bronze; in fall older foliage will darken to purple and bronze. This is the state flower of Oregon, 2-3 inch flower clusters of bright yellow emerge in early spring, blooms are followed by clusters of blue black berries. The berries are edible and can be made into jam; they are not very sweet, so the real value is the varieties of birds that will visit your yard to feast upon them. Oregon Grape is very easy to grow, can be planted in sun or shade, but will grow taller and spread quicker in areas with partial shade.
