Helianthus maximiliani (Perennial Sunflower)

Helianthus maximiliani (Perennial Sunflower)

Helianthus maximiliani (Perennial Sunflower) is another plant that will color garden in Fall. In September this plant shows on multiple clusters its bright golden yellow sunflower like flowers, but unlike sunflowers, this plant will survive the winter and come back next season in an even bigger clump.
Depending on the soil condition, this plant will become 4 to 8 inches high and make an a wonderful accent plant at the back of your border or along fences.
The bees and butterflies will be grateful and the birds will feed on the seeds later in Fall. Unlike with the sunflowers, the birds don't have to compete with the squirrels. The high flowers stalks are not strong enough to support the squirrels, so the finches have plenty enough opportunity to feast.
Again an easy plant to grow. Given average water it will withstand frost as well Redding's heat and will multiply over its root system. It only needs cutting back completely in winter.
