Fremontodendron californicum (Flannel Bush)

Fremontodendron californicum (Flannel Bush)

Fremontodendron californicum (Flannel Bush) is a Californian native which grows around Redding. Along Highway 44 direction to Lassen you can see these large shrubs growing on dry slopes. There they bake in full sun, whiteout any summer water. In winter the temperatures certainly drops below freezing, which makes it a real though plant, fully adapted to our local climate.
It will tolerate garden conditions but won't be as long lived as in the wild. On the other hand, in gardens it will grow a lot faster, becoming a small tree in just 3 years!
It is certainly worth having this shrub in your garden. In spring Flannel Bush will be loaded with big yellow flowers and it's nicely formed evergreen leaves makes it a eye-catching shrub.
