Echinacea purpurea (Purple Coneflower)

Echinacea purpurea (Purple Coneflower)

Echinacea is an all star garden standard, with iconic purple flowers with golden beehive cone centers. Echinacea begins to bloom in late spring, and will continue to bloom through fall if dead headed. Blooms are born on sturdy, self-supporting stems, and are wonderful for cut flower arrangements. Not picky about soil and tolerant of full sun exposure, Echinacea is perfect in flower beds and borders. Bees and butterflies love this flower, as do birds such as finches, which eat the seeds from late season flowers left to seed for winter. Note of caution, if you live in gopher infested areas plant Echinacea clumps in chicken wire basket, or large containers, since theses underground pest savor the roots of this plant. Perhaps gophers are very smart; Echinacea root is used medicinally as an immune stimulant
