Centranthus ruber (Jupiter's Beard)

Centranthus ruber (Jupiter's Beard)

Copious abundance of pink blossoms rise in spikes above grey green foliage blooming from late spring to early summer on this outstanding perennial. It is hard to believe a plant that looks so beautiful and delicate could be so tough. Centanthus ruber thrives and proliferates in dry areas with poor soil the only conditions it does poorly in are moist shaded areas. Plants can grow to 3 ft. tall and will spread by seed and division. A beautiful cluster of these grow along the freeway onramp from California Highway 44 West to I-5 North, you may have seen them a blaze with bloom and marveled at how something so beautiful could be thriving in some place so inhospitable. Centrenthus ruber can be planted in rock gardens, edges of flower beds, or in open dry areas where it can naturalize. The flowers attract butterflies, bees, and humming birds, and make wonderful cut flowers for arrangements.
