Arbutus unedo (Strawberry Tree)

Arbutus unedo (Strawberry Tree)

This is a Mediterranean cousin to our California native Madrone tree slow to moderate growth 8 to 35 feet tall with same spread. Prune suckers from base for single trunked trees, or allow growing for a multi-trunked tree. Multiple trees can be planted together to create an attractive screen. Strawberry Trees are evergreen, with red stems and thick glossy dark green leafs. Bark is red brown and very attractive, as trees grow branches and trunks have a tendency to grow twisted and gnarly. Clusters of downturned white flowers are followed by the beautiful round red fruits this tree is name for. Though not particularly tasty for humans, fruits are enjoyed by wildlife.
This is a wonderful tree for our area tolerant of many soil conditions, heat and low water, must have good drainage, if watered regularly. Arbutus unedo will grow in Redding areas full sun or partial shade. This tree is always attractive; I believe it will become a favorite tree of anyone who plants it.
