Aesculus californica (Buckeye)

Aesculus californica (Buckeye)

Aesculus californica (Buckeye) is an upright, multi trunked smallish tree or large shrub (10-20 ft. high), native to California.
In many ways a very special shrub with pale apple-green leaves, maturing to rich green. In late spring fragrant, cream-colered hugh flowers appear. In its native habitat Buckeye will drop its leaves in mid summer to survive the tripple didgets days, but given moderate water it will hold on its big leaves in a garden setting. In fall large pear shape fruits will grow and in winter when all leaves dissapear these large fruits will hang on the shrub as christmas balls on a christmas tree, and if you didn't used them already in flower arrangements, waiting for animals to feast on in the cold season.
